Prayers for Katie Larkin and the Bowling Family
Katie Larkin and her friend were in a single car accident on Saturday morning in Ocala, Florida around 3:30am.
Katie's friend did not make it and was pronounced dead on the
scene and Katie Larkins (you may know her aunt as "Squeak" Larkins) was life flighted to Shands at the University of Florida.
She had alot of internal bleeding and a small puncture in her left lung. She is doing really good today and is more lively, but is not out of the ballpark yet. Just please send her prayers and lift this situation to the Lord.

Barrel Racer Bios Minimize

I started competing at barrels and poles at 8 years old.  I have trained professionally since 1992.  I've been successful with many horses that I have owned, trained and competed on.  The unique knowledge I have from starting colts to finishing basics to competing on the 1D barrel horse and 21 second pole horse has taught me more than the average competitor.  The knowledge of how to communicate and cue horses from the very beginning to the end is a lifetime of experience and that is the horsemanship I hope to teach you.  I train and give lessons daily, and I do several clinics a year.  I love what I do, and I look forward to helping every horse and rider, I meet.

I was born in Southern California, grew up in a horse town called Norco, then moved to Colorado when I got married, lived there 8 years, moved to Louisiana with my husband's career, which brought us to Florida where I have resided since 2001.  Some titles I have earned over the years are as follows:

1994 Top 5 Novice Horse Program on Cali
1995 District Champion NBHA 2D on Cali
1995 Top 5 NBHA State Championships on Cali
1997 NBHA Colorado year end Champ 2D on Cali & Cash
1997 C&L Winter Buckle Champion on Cali & Cash
1998 NBHA year end Champ and Top 5 1D title on Cali & Cash
1999 Top 5 year end district finalist 1D and 2D on Cali & Cash
1995-2000 NBHA World Qualifier in 1D and 2D on Cali & Cash
2003-2007 1D and 2D money won with over 250 entries, open rodeo money on Korbel Goodtime and Jose Bexas
2007 Novice Horse 1D Reserve Champion with Tour of Champions on Runaway Brisco
2009 Tour of Champs year end Top 3 Finalist in Novice Horse 2D & Futurity 1D on Alilhankypankyatsix "Lil Martha" and Derby 1D Top 3 on Runaway Brisco

I love teaching horses and riders, and I enjoy the teamwork accomplished to reach a goal.  My training techniques are kind, effective, and they are based on universal horsemanship theories.  I can take a young horse and finish their basics, getting them broke from the face to the hind end, supple and using their bodies correctly.  I take in horses to pattern for barrels and poles and offer tune ups.  I have the owners involved closely in the training of each horse with lessons included in the training fees.  I give constant updates as to where they are in training, so the owner can keep it going once they go home.  I start all of my horses in snaffles or side pulls & leverage bits occasionally.  I only pattern them after they have solid basics.  I will haul them for exposure and exhibitions.  I can campaign for them at shows or rodeos when they are ready.  The result of my training is a consistent, happy, and well educated horse.  My end goal is a team competing at their best.  My program is designed to treat each horse as an individual, while the concept and principles are the same, the time tables and techniques may vary!

I offer something for everyone.  Private, hourly lessons for the advanced team that needs to shave off tenths or private lessons for the beginner who might need lots of personal instruction to get started.  You can come to group lessons which offer a relaxed atmosphere to watch and learn, while training, with 4 to 6 riders for two hours.  Another fun event I do is an ALL DAY Clinic with beginner to advanced riders.  There are many exercises to keep you learning and moving all day long, other barrel racers to mingle with and lots of information to consume in one day.  I can take your horse in training monthly and you attend a lesson a week with them at my place.  I have many options available to suit your needs.  Just give me a call or email me and I will be happy to discuss it with you.

You may learn more about me and my ideas on training by going to FloridaBarrelHorses.com and looking up my articles at "Ask Tina".   I have a few years of articles there for you to read.  I love horses first and foremost then barrel racing!  I enjoy helping the horse/rider improve their relationship and competition.

I feel if I can help ONE horse & ONE owner to have a better relationship than it's ALL worth it.  I believe a horse should have a solid foundation, so they can go on to any event and be successful.  I like to have a horse broke from head to tail to give and move away from the lightest pressure.  An example of that would be; when I ride most of my clients horses they are very heavy in the face, and they don't use their hind ends correctly.  On a scale of 1 being the lightest and 10 being heavy, most are 8 to 10 on being heavy, laterally and vertically in the face, which does not allow then to round the back and use the hind end as well.  If a horse is heavy in the face, they will not be soft in the body or collected.  It takes time to get a horse light.  It's a constant maintenance to keep them light after that.  An example, of how to teach them to become light would be;  if you where to ask the horse to give to rein pressure with 1 pound of pressure releasing as soon as they soften, or you would add pressure up to 10 pounds, until your horse gives one inch or more, at that time you release, reward and wait, then build off that.  Then you need to address using their body correctly next with the same concept in mind.  I hope this example gives you an idea of my training philosophy.

I believe in building a relationship with a horse based on trust, respect and cues.  I do not believe in fear, pain or intimidation training.  I believe in making the wrong thing difficult and the right thing easy.  I want my horse to enjoy learning and feel good about it.  All of this can be taught by using horsemanship, timing, feel and reward.  I would love to teach any horse lover/barrel racer my program.  I offer common sense solutions for the common problems people deal with in barrel racing and pole bending, from shouldering/hitting barrels, over-running barrels, alleyway issues and more.  I can't promise you that you will never have a bad run again, but I can promise you that you will improve and when you do make a mistake you will know why and how to fix it.  There are many things that help you win, proper training and a healthy horse is a huge part of it.

I thank my parents for getting me into horses as a child.  It was my Mom's passion and has become mine since that time.  There are few things in life that calm you, bring you pure joy and make everything all right, for me, it's being beside or on a horse.  Of course we all need a RUSH sometimes too!  It's the "NEED FOR SPEED" that all of us timed event junkies have in common!   Barrel racing is addicting, but well worth all the effort when you hear the announcer say, "THE NEW TIME TO BEAT" or "THE WINNER IS"!  If you have any questions, or if I can help you in anyway with your horse, please email me or call me.  See ya down the road, I compete with NBHA FL, Tour of Champions, super shows, rodeos and jackpots.

I have been writing advice articles "Ask Tina" and barrel racer bios for FloridaBarrelHorses.com and Florida Equine Athlete for years now.  If you would like to learn more about me please go to my personal web site; www.tlcbarrelhorsetraining.com .  My web site provides more videos, photos, and information about my business.

Glory be to God and the Power of Prayer!   Be Thankful Always!  Tina - TLC

Tina's Tips Minimize

Question: Colic Season!

Sometimes you can do everything right and still have a colic.  Just as you can catch a cold or flu bug this time of year, they can get sick too.  These weather changes are hard on the horses!  Just as we don't drink as much water nor do they.  Just as our bodies get sick and immune systems get weak from working outside in the cold so do they!  It can be hot monday, rain tuesday and freezing wednesday, then repeat on thursday in Florida.  Try to do extra things to keep your horses healthy right now.  Make sure they have access to clean water that is not FREEZING to drink.  Add some loose minerals or/and salt to feed/grain to encourage drinking.  Now that there is no grass and they eat more dry hay they can get impacted easy!  You can wet your hay, add wet bran or oil if they seem to have dry manure, wet grain for more moisture in the gut.  I like to leave out loose minerals and salts too now that there is no grass they need more minerals as well.  It's a hard time of year for them as it is for us getting sick.  Try to keep them out of the weather; wind, rain, or cold when possible, blanket under 45 if they aren't use to the cold.  Take care of them, as they can't take care of themselves the way we have domesticated them!

Question:
Hi Tina,
I traded some really nice colts that were started on the barrels to some out of state people for what was supposed to be a 1d/2d gelding with no soundess issues and no bad habits. I took him to our first race and he turned the first 2 smooth and fast and headed to the third and totally ducked off to the right before the barrel. He is a left handed horse and I was ready to turn right and he turned so fast that I almost ate dirt. Everyone there said I didn't look like I almost fell off, but trust me, I nearly did.  I've contacted several people who knew of the horse and apparantly he has done this since he was young. The people that I got him from won't answer my phone calls or emails (no wonder) but others who know and have ridden the horse say that he will sometimes make a bigtime winning run and then others will duck off before either the 2nd or 3rd barrels. That is also when running him to the right barrel first. I had vets and chiropracters look at him and they have found no physical problems. I was told that he runs with just a ring snaffle and no tie down. I have since put a short shank bit with a twisted wire mouthpiece and a noseband on him also with no tiedown and have gone back to basics. He doesn't really love this bit but I feel like I have a lot of control and he is starting to give at the poll and stop nicely. He didn't really have a stop at all before. He was started & futuritied on by Cary Quackenbush. This horse is as sweet as can be to be around and to ride and I really don't want to give up on him. He is coming 15, though and I don't know if it is something that can be corrected. We have not had a race since so I don't know if the slow steady stuff has helped yet, but wondered what your thoughts were and if you could give me some exercises?
Thank you for your help,
Shawna

Question:
Hi,

I don't know if I'm contacting the right person at wwwfloridabarrelhorses.com?  Are you the lady who can help me with my gate problems? From Indiana

I can send you a video after this weekend, because I will be going to a show!  Well, my horse is kind of hard to describe so I will start from the beginning. I bought her about 1.5 years ago & she was a solid 2d horse.  She was bad mannered; she would rear when you walked her & push you around.  I quickly put an end to that.  I trained like a mad person, because I was new to barrel racing (not riding) & she could tell & was taking even more advantage of me.  So I worked all winter & we melted together. We worked as a team.
I have worked on my part & I have stopped caring about what she does(well at least I dont show it). She doesn't let people get on her either without spinning around and running off.  Then I started showing, but when I did I stumbled upon our problem, she was gate sour!  I didn't know how to deal with it, so i got scared. I fell into asking EVERYONE for advice(which made our gate problems even worse), this went on for THREE months.
